One of my most primal fears, that brings me right up into my animal brain and triggers a profoundly physical fear response, is not knowing the story. Here I contrast this with the freedom of abstract expressionism.

I was recently invited by artist and curator, Emily Stevens, to take part in an exhibition exploring the theme ‘Home’. I made all new work for this show, which featured many of the graduates from the RCA MA painting programme. Here I delve into the ideas behind this body of work.

I am so happy to share with you that I was recently invited to be interviewed by Bianca Vinther, artist, curator and author of ‘The Pointless Artist’ blog and podcast series. It was a wonderful experience that made for a vivid and deep conversation about my relationship to art.

The word ‘moment’ comes up a lot in relation to my paintings. I have a series called ‘Moments of Truth’ and I talk about moments of encounter between viewer and painting. I want to say something about what these moments embody for me.

How much can the artist be said to be the author of the meaning of their work? This is an interesting question because clearly the work hasn’t been made by anyone else. But if we explore a bit further, we can begin to understand that there are more sources of meaning than the person who put paint to canvas, or pen to paper.

This is what art does to me: it shatters the matrix.

I know that authenticity is a buzzword at the moment and you might be rolling your eyes reading this but I feel moved to address it in the context of being an artist, specifically.
