Moments of Truth

A new collection of five works on paper for 2018, inspired by the unknowable, abstract, glorious state of wonder that can only exist in nascent possibility. The place between having overcome and before actualizing into new form.

Deep Attraction
Oil on Arches Paper, 162x126cm

Attraction is a force. Magnets attract, souls attract and in this painting the opposing forces are red and blue. There is a dance going on as the colours seek to integrate, while remaining distinct, at once tentative and powerful. The spaces between, allow each colour to breathe, back lit by white to illuminate them. The final image captures their dynamic interplay in a composition that references a moment of deep attraction, rather than a conclusive end.

I Will Bear You Up
Oil on Arches Paper, 171.5x127.5cm

My starting point for this painting, was to convey the power and strength of being not only raised up, but held and borne there. In effect being pinned up by force of intention. With all weakness and remnants of the struggle observable but irrelevant against the brilliance and conviction of the source energy.

Meet You Here
Oil on Arches Paper, 168x126cm

The theme I had in mind while painting this piece was of our deep need to connect, played against our insistence on separate pathways to approach that meeting point. The paradox being that in the moment of unity, we find we had been together all along but with our gaze turned away. Not without resistance, the colours have composed themselves into a unified form, while retaining the expression of how they got there.

Ascension Piece
Oil on Arches Paper, 168.5x127.5cm

After a succession of failed paintings, my intention for this piece was to employ restraint, lightness of touch and economy of paint. Starting from a heavily pigmented wash as a foundation, I traced some of the gaps and laid down carefully selected painted fragments by way of contrast. I am interested in portraying intersected layers of reality and how our physical and spiritual bodies  inform each other and coexist in our individually defined experiences of living.

Play of Light
Oil on Arches Paper, 168x128cm

This painting speaks of the convergence of light with darkness and how, far from being a malignant force, it is somehow the effect of darkness to frame and give form to the light. Tenderly held by ribbons of Prussian Blue, the light is offered in the manner of a gift to behold.
